Review
Worcester eventually inflicted a devastating defeat on Aylesford Bulls, leaving the visitors languishing at the foot of the premiership. However, despite the impressive score line, Aylesford were very much in the game until the 53 minute, at which point coach Kat Merchant introduced impact players from the bench and the game ran away from the visitors.
Worcester opened the game with positive attacking moves, but the Aylesford defence were steadfast for 14 minutes at which point Zoe Bennion opened the home side’s account following a great line break which the visitors had no answer to. When Kelly Smith increased the lead with a dynamic run down the left wing 5 minutes later and Benny Williams converted, it looked like game over. Aylesford had different ideas though and their ferocious defence kept the home side at bay until half time and it looked as though Worcester would struggle to get the much needed result.
Aylesford started the second half with intent and it was no real surprise when Sarah Riordan broke through the home defence to score under the posts, Riordan converting her try, game on at 12 -7.
However, Worcester appeared undaunted by the narrow margin and clearly a good half time talk from Kat Merchant began to take effect and the home side proceeded to totally dominate the remainder of the game, although the visitors never dropped their heads and fought hard until the final whistle, which must have provided them with some relief.
Nine further tries rained in from Ceri Large, Lisa Campbell (2), Laura Keates, Bianca Blackburn, Sammy Parker and Rachel Lund (3), whose appearance from the bench along with Abi Walker undoubtedly transformed the game.
In most reports the try scorers get the recognition, deservedly so, however there are also unsung heroes and in this game, Rhi Parker at inside centre, was the orchestrator and steady influence throughout in her best game yet for Worcester.
Worcester travel to Wasps next Sunday and hope to build on this performance to climb the league table.
