In round 9 of the Women’s Premiership games, Lichfield entertained local rivals Worcester. Despite the difficult conditions, Lichfield continued their excellent recent form, to deliver a nine try bonus point win for the third week running.

With both sides missing key players due to international call ups, it was Lichfield who started with the most energy and purpose and Worcester were immediately forced to defend their line.

Lichfield’s outside centre Holly Aitchison opened the scoring after 4 minutes and went on to bag a hat-trick of tries in the first 24 minutes as she continually outpaced the Worcester defence. Wingers Jasmine Coyne and Charlotte Pearce added two further tries and Sarah Nicholas added four conversions to get Lichfield the bonus point before half time. Worcester’s only score of the game came from an unconverted Zoe Bennion try after 38 minutes, bringing the half time score to 33-5 to Lichfield

Despite playing against the wind in the second half, Lichfield continued to threaten Worcester, but dogged Worcester defence kept them out until outstanding No.8 Carys Williams crashed over under the posts after 56 minutes. Hannah Phillip (72 mins), Sarah Nicholas (78 mins) and Molly Morrissey (80 mins) added three late tries, together with another three Sarah Nicholas conversions to bring the final result to 59-5 for the home side.

Commenting on the match, Lichfield’s Head Coach Rich Bennett said “I was extremely pleased with our excellent performance again today. We executed our game plan really well. We were solid in defence and efficient in attack, clinically converting well crafted scoring opportunities into points throughout the game.

We must give full credit to Worcester who worked tirelessly in defence throughout the game, despite fielding a much changed side. But today we were just far too good for them and we thoroughly deserved our comprehensive win.

We now need to use the confidence and form generated over the last few games into the home game against Saracens next week, it promises to be a really good game”
