Cheltenham Ladies suffer first league defeat

Cheltenham Ladies suffered their first defeat of the league season on Sunday going down 7-0 away to Henley in treacherous conditions. It was touch and go if the game would go ahead due to snow, rain and standing water, but the pitch was deemed playable and the Tiger Ladies made their way to Henley.

The first half was bright for Cheltenham, with long periods of possession and territory, seeing them get very close to scoring on several occasions. The closest being by the impressive Maddie Massey, who kicked the ball through but just knocked on over the line in the mud. Unfortunately the inability to convert this pressure into points was the telling factor.

The second half saw a swing in possession and Henley enjoyed large patches of possession and although Cheltenham defended valiantly, a slipped tackle 20 metres out meant Henley could slide in to score a converted try.

Cheltenham did not lack heart or ambition, but they struggled to play their expansive game in the cold and wet and too many unforced errors meant they could not retain possession long enough to trouble the strong Henley defence.  A well-coached Henley continued to pressurise the Tigers and pinned them back with a series of clever kicks, all fielded well by Cheltenham full back Daisy Fahey. A couple of late penalties for Cheltenham gave them hope, however it was not to be and the match ended 7-0.

Cheltenham stay top of the league, however Thurrock remain hot on their heels and the girls travel to them on Sunday, which will be undoubtedly the toughest match of the season and is a must win if the Tigers hope to take the Championship title.
