The Women’s Championship 1 is the second tier of Women’s Rugby in England and is played in two groups of eight teams, known as Championship 1 North and Championship 1 South. Below you can see the final standings for Championship 1 North at the end of the 2018/19 Season. Prior to the formation of the new Premier 15s league, the winners of each group would have a play off and then challenge the team who finished bottom of the Women’s Premiership, for a place in the top league for the following season. However, the new top tier has been ring fenced and the only way to enter it is to apply, as and when the RFU offer invitations.
In 2018/19, the single play off was replaced by the Women’s Championship 1 Cup and Plate competitions, which saw an attempt to pair off the top half of each region in a kind of play off against each other. Some matches were played, but for most tier 2 clubs the distances involved were just too large to be feasible. However, the top two teams in each competition did finish the season off with a Championship 1 North v South Cup Final and Plate Final.
